Guidlines For Submitting Electronic Files For Printing

OUR PREFERENCES

  • File Type: it depends on what your file/artwork contains. However, native files usually work. An .EPS is preferred for Illustrator, a .PSD file with layers is preferred for Photoshop, otherwise an .EPS/TIF.
  • Always supply ALL fonts - printer & screen
  • Supply all photos, graphics used anywhere in the file: embedded or linked, etc.
  • Bleeds should be 1/8 inch
  • Indicate whether the job is 4-color process or spot; if it`s spot color, indicate PMS colors clearly
  • Photos or any photoshop files should be high-resolution (at least) = 300 pixels/inch when used/placed at 100% for quality reproduction purposes; if the resolution of your file is lower, using the Image Size/Resolution setting to seemingly increase the file`s resolution technically WILL NOT achieve a higher quality image when reproduced - notify us to address this concern.
  • Submit/fax a sample of what the file should look like, indicating trim size, crops, bleeds, folds, and perforations. It helps greatly when determining what the file should look like as variations occur across platforms, with fonts, applications, etc.
  • Supply barcodes as a separate hi-resolution graphic element as well

APPLICATIONS

  • Create artwork in an application suitable for color separations and trapping to ensure correctly printed piece
  • Quark Xpress: four-color process or spot color jobs; compose photo, graphics & text elements with all supporting/linked pictures & fonts.
  • Illustrator: four-color process or spot color jobs; include original electronic files of any embedded elements, graphics, photos & fonts. Always good to send a version with fonts converted to outlines too.
  • Photoshop: provide a .PSD file format containing all layers. CMYK mode for 4-color process jobs that do NOT need trapping; if a SPOT color job is created in CMYK mode, we cannot correctly get SPOT color separations/traps from the file, it will separate as 4-color process.
  • PDF: four-color process or spot color jobs; include all supporting/linked pictures & fonts.

DEFINITIONS

  • 4-Color Process: color is specified in percentages of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black (CMYK). When superimposed during the four-color printing process, their separate plates recreate a full-color look (photographs are printed this way).
  • Spot Color: color is NOT built as described above... instead; the color is printed using ink made exclusively for that color.
  • Bleed: a page element that extends beyond the trim size of the finished piece. Should extend 1/8 inch.
  • Trim size: the finished page size after any cutting is done.
  • Linked/Embedded Items: with applications such as QuarkXPress, Pagemaker & Illustrator you can import or place an image into your document - this DOES NOT mean it will print correctly on a printer or printing press. You must provide us with that placed/linked graphic along with the rest of your electronic files.
  • Resolution: refers to the degree of detail in a rasterized image. High-resolution images are 300 pixel/inch used at 100% and are necessary to produce high-quality output; images of lower resolution result in a decrease of image quality.
  • Printer/Screen Fonts: printer fonts reside in the printer or are downloaded to the printer during printing; screen fonts make it possible to see the font on the computer screen. Depending on the kind of font, you should provide us with the font SUITCASE (screen font) and the Postscript/TrueType, etc. (printer font), which are accessible on your computer hard drive... provide us a copy of them.
  • Trapping: a slight overlapping of colors that prevents gaps from appearing along the edges of different colors because of misalignment or movement on the printing press.
